The evolution of bathroom cabinetry: yesterday vs. tomorrow

Interior Design  /  December 9, 2016

The evolution of bathroom cabinetry is closely linked to that of the sink.

Before the introduction of running water, the vanity table used a simple ceramic or enameled iron bowl, inserted into a wrought iron stand or sitting on a table with a marble top. The more advanced models were equipped with mirrors and arms for hanging towels, and there were models with a hole cut into the counter to support the basin. With the arrival of running water, a ceramic sanitary fixture entered the scene with a faucet and drain pipe, the sink, which has gradually replaced the basin. The most popular model is the free standing sink, produced in different versions: column, suspended, or mounted on a chromed steel console. Yet for bathroom cabinets, years of oblivion loomed, at least until the Second World War.

In the years of economic boom variations in drop-in and semi drop-in sinks appeared and so bathroom vanities and cabinets became indispensable. Designers have been competing to design ever more sophisticated models: from super colorful formica of the ’50s to the gloss of the ’80s, bathroom cabinets took on a lead role, occupying more and more space, with side columns, shelves, and large mirrors. As of the end of the ’90s the trend changed dramatically: opulence gave way to a more understated and yet refined style. Purity of shape, lightness of form, and natural materials characterize the new style that is inspired by spas and the Far East. The sink has become the star again with models like vessel sinks which are reminiscent of the basins of the past, while bathroom cabinets have been resized, acquiring elegance and refinement, thanks to clean lines, the quality of materials, and finish.

In the end, researching composite materials and technological innovation of production processes have once again revolutionized the design of the sink. The more current trend is moving towards the pinnacle of integrated models, with fluid lines and captivating design. Bathroom cabinetry is evolving again and is transforming into a sophisticated, elegant object in which the attention to detail and quality materials make the difference.
